Think you know all about the Notting Hill Carnival? Think again!

London, UK - August 27, 2012: Performers take part in the second day of Notting Hill Carnival, largest in Europe. Carnival takes place over two days in every August.

Europe’s biggest street party will be kicking off at the end of this month, and to celebrate we’ve been looking into the history of this London mainstay. Here are 5 things you (probably!) never knew:

  • With over 2 million attendees expected this year, the Carnival will be bigger, noisier and more fun than ever before!
  • In fact, it’s one of the biggest carnivals in the world – second only to the Rio de Janeiro street festival.
  • Every single costume in the “Mas” (Masquerade – costume) bands  – is hand-made. That’s almost 15,000 costumes to sew…
  • Over 5 tons of chicken – and more than 400 goats! – will be served by the 300 (or so) food stalls. Party-goers will wash this down with over 25,000 bottles of rum in total!
  • And finally – It is compulsory to carry a whistle and blow it shrilly when tourists are bumping against you…
